I was once asked, “If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one around to hear it, did it make a sound?”. This question puzzled me for a while but gave me a deeper understanding of perception, observation and interaction- principles that now underpin my design philosophy. It constantly reminds me that design is not just aesthetics but an amalgamation of our collective consciousness.

It would probably be easier for me to doodle my introduction for I have always found it more comfortable to communicate through visuals than words. Hello, I’m Varsha. As a child, I was captivated by house crows, my grandma’s stories and the colour green. My early fascination with peculiar objects, dipping my brush in paint or collecting clippings of fauna from magazines and newspapers, led me to find solace in creative exploration. I once thought my scribbles on the wall were my finest artwork until I shifted my canvas from paper to pixels. It brings me immense joy that we can capture and convey our experiences to the masses through visual design.

As an illustrator and graphic designer, I am keen on devoting my practice to creating designs that are consequential and purposeful. Innovations are necessary, but I also believe that real progress is made when we start questioning. It could be an existing social dialogue, self-reflection or unlearning.

Previously, I have worked on projects aimed at preventing illegal wildlife trade, written commentary on our perception of the mind and body, and undertaken commercial projects, including identity design and packaging. From all my combined experience, I have learnt that ideas can be communicated with impact for awareness and advocacy.
